Is quantum mechanics compatible with a deterministic universe? Two interpretations of quantum probabilities

چکیده

Two problems will be considered: the question of hidden parameters and the problem of Kolmogorovity of quantum probabilities. Both of them will be analyzed from the point of view of two distinct understandings of quantum mechanical probabilities. Our analysis will be focused, as a particular example, on the Aspect-type EPR experiment. It will be shown that the quantum mechanical probabilities appearing in this experiment can be consistently understood as conditional probabilities without any paradoxical consequences. Therefore, nothing implies in the Aspect experiment that quantum theory is incompatible with a deterministic universe. * Forthcoming in Foundations of Physics Letters (June 1995) † E-mail: [email protected]

A Priori Probability and Localized Observers

A physical and mathematical framework for the analysis of probabilities in quantum theory is proposed and developed. One purpose is to surmount the problem, crucial to any reconciliation between quantum theory and space-time physics, of requiring instantaneous ”wave-packet collapse” across the entire universe. The physical starting point is the idea of an observer as an entity, localized in spa...

The Emergence and Interpretation of Probability in Bohmian Mechanics

The Bohm interpretation of quantum mechanics is capable of illustrating, by itself, virtually every philosophical and foundational conundrum associated with physical probability. One reason this is true is that the Bohm interpretation comes in many forms, both stochastic and deterministic. The other reason is that quantum mechanics is to Bohmian mechanics roughly as statistical mechanics is to ...

Is quantum mechanics compatible with an entirely deterministic universe?

It will be argued that 1) the Bell inequalities are not equivalent with those inequalities derived by Pitowsky and others that indicate the Kolmogorovity of a probability model, 2) the original Bell inequalities are irrelevant to both the question of whether or not quantum mechanics is a Kolmogorovian theory as well as the problem of determinism, whereas 3) the Pitowsky-type inequalities are no...

A Nonlinear Quantum Model of the Friedmann Universe

A discussion is given of the quantisation of a physical system with finite degrees of freedom subject to a Hamiltonian constraint by treating time as a constrained classical variable interacting with an unconstrained quantum state. This leads to a quantisation scheme that yields a Schrödinger-type equation which is in general nonlinear in evolution. Nevertheless it is compatible with the probab...
